What is Karate?
The word
“Karate” literally means empty
hand. It is a Japanese method of self defense in which the
practitioner (karate-ka) uses only their body (hands, feet, knees, elbows,
etc.) to defend themselves. It requires both physical and mental
training.
About Genbu-Kai Karate-Do
Oneonta Genbu Kai Dojo at Harmony Martial Arts & Fitness is a Demura-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai dojo.
Genbu-Kai is an international martial arts organization that was founded by world-renowned martial arts expert Fumio Demura. Master Demura came to the United States from Japan in 1965 to teach karate and work in the movie industry. His most famous roll was as Pat Morita’s stunt double in the Karate Kid series of films in the 1980s and 1990s.
He is also the subject of the 2015 documentary film The Real Miyagi.

As a member of the Genbu-Kai organization, we put emphasis on our students being good people both inside and

Karate Classes
Karate
classes are typically divided into four sections: warm-up & stretching
(taiso), basics (kihons), forms (katas), and sparring (kumite).
Standardized Belt Testing
Standardized
belt (rank) testing is offered on a quarterly basis to those students who have
fulfilled class attendance requirements and are able to demonstrate knowledge
of the required basics, kata(s), and sparring techniques that are necessary for
the rank that is being tested.
