Sensei Brooke Chilson began training in the art of Shito-Ryu Karate-do Genbu-Kai in 1995. She tested for Sho Dan Ho in 2001 and earned the rank of Sho Dan (1st degree Black Belt) in 2002. She went on to earn her 2nd degree black belt ranking in 2007 and her 3rd degree ranking in 2014. She earned her 4th degree black belt ranking in 2019, and then earned her current 5th degree black belt ranking in 2024.
In 1996 Sensei Chilson began training in the art of Okinawan kubodo (weapons). She is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt in kobudo and she trains in the following weapons: nunchuku, bo, kama, eku bo, tonfa, sai, and tekko.
In 1998 Sensei Chilson began training in the art of Toyama-Ryu Batto-Do (Japanese sword). She currently holds a 4th degree ranking in the discipline, having attained the rank in February 2023.
Sensei Chilson has received several awards for her hard work and dedication as a martial artist, including New York Genbu-Kai Student of the year (1997) and New York Genbu-Kai Competitor of the Year (1999 and 2000).
On February 15th, 1997 Sensei Chilson appeared on television in an episode of The Martial Arts Today Show where she performed Pinan Go Dan in a segment featuring women’s kata.
During her 28+ years of martial arts training Sensei Chilson has competed in many tournaments. In February 2010 she competed at both the 9th Annual International Batto-do (sword) Championships and the 39th Annual Goodwill International (Karate) Championships that were held in Costa Mesa, California. At the batto-do tournament she received the Ginosho Award for technical skill. At the karate tournament she took 3rd place in both women’s black belt kata (forms) and women’s black belt kumite (sparring). She competed at the 17th Annual Batto-Do Championships in Costa Mesa, California on February 17th, 2018 and took 3rd place in the women's cutting division. In 2019 she took 3rd place in black belt division kata (both men and women) and 2nd place in the women's cutting division at the 18th Annual Batto-Do Championships. Sensei Chilson competed at the 22nd Annual Batto-Do Championships held on February 25th, 2023 in Santa Ana, California. She took first place in the black belt kata division (for San Dans and above, men and women combined) and a third place in the women's cutting division. Most recently Sensei Chilson took second place in the black belt kata division at the 23rd Annual Batto-Do Championships held on February 24th, 2024 in Santa Ana, California.
Sensei Chilson’s favorite katas include Itosu Bassai Dai, Seipai, and Supar Renpei.
Sensei Chilson’s favorite techniques include gyaku zuki (reverse punch) and kake geri (hook kick).
Currently, Sensei Chilson trains and is the head instructor at Oneonta Genbu-Kai Dojo at Harmony Martial Arts & Fitness. She has also taught martial arts and self defense courses at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York.
